How do you prepare for 24-hour and 48-hour championship racing in 2027?

The short answer

Start with the calendar, because the qualifying happens now. The GOMU 48-Hour World Championship runs 3-5 September 2027 in Skanderborg, Denmark, with registration opening 1 August 2026. For Australians, the 24-hour pathway runs through AUTRA selection.

The calendar

  • GOMU 48-Hour World Championship. 3-5 September 2027, Skanderborg, Denmark. Registration opens 1 August 2026.
  • IAU 24-Hour World Championships. Run on a two-year cycle. The last edition was held in Albi, France, on 18-19 October 2025.
  • GOMU 6-Day World Championship. 3-9 September 2026, Balatonfüred, Hungary. Registration is already open.
  • Australian selection. Through AUTRA. The historic benchmark has been 240km for men and 220km for women, though athletes at 220km and 200km are encouraged to apply, because selection is discretionary rather than a pure cutoff.

Timed racing is not the gentle option

One to two kilometres of flat loop, repeated for a day or two, means near-identical footstrikes tens of thousands of times on unforgiving surfaces. Trail gives a runner involuntary variation: different angles, different muscle recruitment, forced walking. A certified loop gives none of it.

Add day heat and night cold, and feet that swell for the full duration, and the equipment problems become predictable rather than random. Cushioning that packs out fades on the same schedule you do. Laces set at noon are wrong by midnight.

This is the format the brand was built around

Matthieu Bonne's 485.099km 48-hour world record and Meg Eckert's 970.685km women's six-day record were both run on exactly this kind of course. The design decisions follow from it: supercritical foams engineered against compression set rather than for peak shop-floor response, and TUNEDFIT dual-zone lacing so the forefoot can be released as swelling peaks without losing the midfoot.

Practical preparation

  • Rehearse the surface. If the championship loop is bitumen, a training block run on grass and trail has not tested your equipment.
  • Plan the rotation. Most experienced timed-race athletes change shoes at least once, often into a half size up, and decide the change point in advance.
  • Rehearse the crew handover. A shoe change under lights at hour eighteen should be a routine you have done before, not a decision you make while cold.
  • Settle the variable early. Qualify in 2026 and go into 2027 with footwear that is already proven over your race duration.

Get fitted by someone who has raced the format. Fixed-time racing rewards preparation that looks obsessive from the outside, and footwear is the cheapest part of it to get right.

Common questions

When and where is the 2027 48-hour World Championship?

The GOMU 48-Hour World Championship is set for 3-5 September 2027 in Skanderborg, Denmark, with registration opening 1 August 2026.

How do Australians qualify for the 24-hour world championships?

Through AUTRA selection. The historic benchmark has been 240km for men and 220km for women, though athletes at 220km and 200km are encouraged to apply, because selection is discretionary rather than a pure cutoff.

What is a 24-hour championship race?

A fixed-time race on a certified loop, usually one to two kilometres, where the result is the distance covered rather than the time taken.

What shoes suit timed-loop racing?

Shoes with durable cushioning and adjustable fit, and usually more than one pair. The surface and footstrike never change, so midsole compression set and swelling-driven fit problems both arrive on a predictable schedule.
