What is Mount to Coast?

A lone runner on an empty desert highway at dusk, the road running to the horizon

The short answer

Mount to Coast is a performance running shoe brand built for ultra distance, launched in 2024 under the line "For runners who transcend distance." It is distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Endurance Edge.

Most running footwear is designed around the marathon and below. The problems it solves are the problems of two to four hours: weight, propulsion, a fit that holds for 42km. Mount to Coast starts where that brief ends, and designs around what happens afterwards. Feet that swell a full size. Foam that packs out somewhere in the second half. Form that comes apart across 100km, 24 hours, or six days on a loop.

The record book carries the argument

Matthieu Bonne covered 485.099km in 48 hours, breaking a mark that had stood for 29 years. Meg Eckert ran 970.685km for the women's six-day world record. Manu Vilaseca holds the women's Triple Crown record at 201:02:06. All three raced in Mount to Coast.

At Badwater 135 in 2025, 23.2% of the field wore the brand, the highest share of any label on course. That is a field of invited ultrarunners choosing footwear for a 217km crossing of Death Valley in July, which is about as unsentimental a test of a shoe as the sport offers.

Fast for an hour is a foam. Still working on the second sunrise is engineering.

What the critics said

Believe in the Run named Mount to Coast Best New Brand 2024. Runner's World, Outside, Forbes, GearJunkie, National Geographic, Triathlete and Men's Journal have since given its shoes category wins. Four models hold the APMA Seal of Acceptance, awarded by a committee of podiatrists reviewing footwear for foot health.

The technology, briefly

Three midsole foams do most of the work. LightCELL is nitrogen-infused and supercritical, 50% lighter than EVA with 45% more energy return. CircleCELL is made from renewable feedstock and holds PEBA-level energy return for roughly twice as long. JETCELL is the newest and the most responsive, with twice the material strength of PEBA. Over the top of all of them sits TUNEDFIT, a dual lacing system that tunes the forefoot and midfoot separately, so fit can be changed on the move as feet swell.
